Andriy Shevchenko

Member of Parliament Andriy Shevchenko is First Deputy Chairman of the Press Freedom Committee in the Ukrainian parliament. 

A seasoned television journalist, he helped establish the 5th Channel, the first independent 24-hour television station in Ukraine, and became the “face” of the 2004 Orange Revolution for television viewers. 

Prior to this, Shevchenko had been a leader of the journalists’ movement against censorship, and, in 2002, was among those who established the Kyiv Independent Media Union, becoming its first chairman. Shevchenko won seats in parliament in both 2006 and 2007 as a member of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc, and serves on the Press Freedom Committee. He aims to establish a system of high-quality, balanced public broadcasting in Ukraine.
